The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc (Font Màgica de Montjuïc): an unmissable spectacle of water and light

Now that summer is just around the corner, it seems that people are more inclined to be out and about on the streets. This is even more likely when we’re talking about a dynamic city like Barcelona that’s always buzzing. The Ciudad Condal, another name by which Barcelona is known in Spanish, offers an unlimited number of outdoor venues to enjoy once the good weather arrives. The Font Màgica de Montjuïc is one of those unmissable spots from which to enjoy a unique spectacle. If you are staying at our boutique hotel on Parallel, you will be just a stone’s throw away from this magical “must see.”

The Font Màgica de Montjuïc is situated at the foot of the mountain of the same name, half-way between the  Plaza de España and the National Art Museum of Catalonia. It is the main feature on this section of the Avenida María Cristina and consists of a masterpiece of waterfalls and water displays. The jewel in the Crown is unquestionably this spectacular fountain that is renowned for its impressively choreographed water displays which can be seen every weekend throughout the year.

Thanks to its unique design and unusual features, the fountain throws up more than 7,000 million combinations of every possible light and colour. This results in an aquatic light show that never ceases to amaze, however many times you’ve seen it. Amongst the most notable choreographies is the 80’s mix which is based on the greatest hits of that decade; the comic book soundtrack which includes music from a range of famous cartoons and comic films or Spanish music with a compilation of some of the most famous Spanish songs.

Each show lasts about 30 minutes which is just enough time to fall under Barcelona’s magic spell. One of the best things about this spectacle is that it is a free show and, surprisingly, it never seems to be overly crowded with tourists which means it has all the right elements to make it into the top favourite attractions for any visitor.

The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc was designed by Carles Buïgas and was built in 1929 as part of the International Exhibition which was held in that same year.
